saturday morning
i woke up to the
smell of bacon
i say it was morning
but i must admit
it was closer to noon
my first thought was
that she must have put
that new skillet to work
i made my way downstairs
and found the evidence
the greasy skillet
sitting on the stove
there were signs of eggs
and canned biscuits too
but what stood out
the most was that
overwhelming smell
of cooked bacon
i wondered
in civilized society
is there any smell
more pervasive than
the smell of bacon
cooking in the morning
quietly i stood
observing the scene
breakfast was over
she was standing
at the sink
washing the dishes
i was thirsty
i had come for my
morning glass
of sink water
but I did not want
to interrupt
her dishwashing
so i chose to do
something different
for a change
i opened the fridge
and grabbed a can of soda
diet--caffeine free--soda
i returned upstairs
to my computer
where i sat and indulged
that cold can of soda
while my office smelled
of cooked bacon
